One-Punch Man Vol 2 by ONE, illustrated by Yusuke Murata || This is just such a fun, weird, action-packed manga about a hero who defeats all enemies with one punch. In this world, there are countless of interesting heroes and villains, all with cool gadgets, altered bodies and/or wild costumes. But here we have our main guy… a bald dude in a tight suit with a cape. Nothing special, yet he seems to be the most powerful person to ever exist. It’s really funny and I appreciate how this mangaka manages to create interesting fights even though it only takes one punch.
The Hand on the Wall (#3) by Maureen Johnson || What to say about this one… I wasn’t necessarily disappointed by this conclusion, but I also wasn’t blown away. The setting is what really sold this for me, a teen solving a murder mystery in this secluded boarding school. I enjoy the characters and the dual timeline aspect. The conclusion was fine … I guess? It’s just that I LOVED the first book and felt like it kind of lost some steam along the way.
The Other People by C.J. Tudor || So I read this book for the Literally Dead Bookclub and unfortunately… I agree with a lot of the critique it’s been getting in the group discussions. I LOVED the multiple POV in this. It was extremely compelling with cliffhangers on nearly every chapter end. I was super interested in what the main secret/reveal ended up being. AND there was actually a lot of meaningful discussion about grief, which came as a surprise. It’s just that some of the details didn’t work for me/took me out of the story and the last few chapters were kind of… not where I hoped it would end up? So a lot of mixed feelings with this one…
The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer || I started this but haven’t gotten far at all. This is one of those books I’ve been meaning to read for YEARS. It’s pretty rambly so it’s taking me a little to get used to the writing style. I’m sure it’ll be very emotional though.
I’m currently lending both The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor and Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn from my library. So probably either of those? I’m still excited to try out The Chalk Man even though I ended up having such mixed feelings about The Other People, since I did love the writing style & pacing.
These are the books I have recently read, am currently reading and plan to read next.
