The sun is also a star  the couple next door  sometimes i lie  Paperweight

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon || It has been about 2 weeks since I read this, but my last WWW post was a while back. So I kind of hate romance books. I’m secretly a grumpy old man. But I let my fiance pick my next read from my TBR shelf and lo and behold, it was one of my 2 unread romance books (amongst 50+ other books). But he chose it, so I read it… and actually… enjoyed it a lot? It was cheesy as hell but I flew through it and liked some of the other topics it discussed. Actually, it even helped with my month-long reading slump. Much wow. It’s melting my icy heart. I’M MELTING.

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena || Look at me actually reading something off the summer TBR I set. *enthusiastically pats own back*. That being said, I really didn’t like it that much. It was just kind of boring to me and I was not invested AT ALL. You find out quite early on who committed the crime. Later there are some more twists but they were kind of underwhelming for me. It wasn’t bad… just alright.

Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney || For one of the TTT posts this month I made a list of horrible characters and the ones from Sometimes I Lie made the list. But then I also realized I didn’t remember any of the plot twist and like… who ended up being the bad guy. So I re-read it. Turns out they’re basically all shit people. But still, one of my favorite thrillers!

Paperweight by Meg Haston || Another re-read! I never re-read books I have no idea what is happening to me. I wanted a friend of mine to read this so we made it into a buddy-read. This book is one of my favorite books ever. It’s a hard-hitting book about a girl who is dealing with an eating disorder, as well as a lot of grief and anger. We follow her as she goes to an inpatient treatment facility. This book really opened up my eyes about the type of trauma that can lead to the development of an eating disorder and how it affects the way a person thinks about everything and everyone around them. Meg Haston really has a talent for describing these complicated thoughts and emotions. It also contains a positive relationship between the main character and her therapist, which I find is often lacking. You can see so much development in the main character as she starts to come to terms with some of the things that happened. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. It’s amazing.

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams by Stephen King || This is a short story collection I had started a while back and only got 4 stories into. Wasn’t a big fan. Now I’ve decided to start over and listen to the audiobook, since it has a bunch of narrators and I thought it might be fun to listen to scary stories instead of read them. So far I got through 6 stories. Still not convinced I like it but at least I think the audiobook format is helping.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (#5) by J.K. Rowling || Soooooo… I’m still listening to this on audio. A month later. I am definitely reading this veeeeeeery slowly. Enjoying every second of it though.

  1. Like you, I’m not huge into romance (does this make me a grumpy old man, too? I’m okay with that). But I got The Sun Is Also A Star for free from the library, and now I’m curious and might have to pick it up that much sooner. Maybe around Christmas. It’s my favorite time for reading cheesy romance books. xD

Oooh … I just rediscovered my copy of The Bazaar of Bad Dreams, too. Which I also only got a few stories into before I set it aside last time. And now I’m concerned. Are we the same person?! I’m thinking I should give it another try, but I’ll be eager to see what you think when you finish. To me, his short stories just don’t have the same charm as his novels, or the ones I’ve read so far didn’t anyway.

  2. LOL so I started the couple next door a month ago and quietly put it down because I could NOT get into it at all. so glad I wasn’t the only one. aaah and I really need to reread harry potter. it’s been so long and since I have a little one now it’s beyond time to.

  3. Totally agree with The Couple Next Door….I was expecting much more. I personally become way more invested in “whodunit” stories, so that book was a disappointment. I loveeee reading Harry Potter when I need something I can zone out to. Currently reading The Good Girl; I like it but again I already know who the bad guy is, so not sure how things can get more intense from here. Thanks for the reviews xox

  4. There’s some goodies here indeed! I’ve not actually read any of them, but I really can’t add anymore to my TBR 😲😭 It’s so huge 😂 I’ve just finished We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and it was dark, disturbing and utterly compelling 🖤 Great post 🤓👍🏻
